Catnip (Nepeta cataria), also called Catmint is an herb native to Southern Europe traditionally but has become naturalized throughout Europe and here in North America.
Most people think of Catnip as something to give to your cat…and while this is one function for this fine herb, there is more to it than that! This plant is good for you as well as your cat, so enjoy some together (buy an extra oz for the cat ha)!
Catnip is used by humans for stress reduction, as a sleep aid, as an antispasmodic, and also in culinary preparations. It has a minty taste and is great to add to any tea. This herb is also suitable to be consumed in capsules or made into a tincture. Sometimes catnip foliage is smoked as well.
