The Cedar tree is a hardy species of tree that grows in America from the northwest to the southwest. There are both male and female trees; however, only the female trees produce this wonderful berry. To the Native Americans, Cedar berries have been a very important symbol and medicinal. A powerful symbol of protection, the Salish of the northwest coast used the berries to banish evil and protect from witchcraft. The Pueblos used the berries to protect against an ailment called “ghost sickness”, that afflicted the handlers of the dead and bereaved family members who had lost loved ones. It was customary for many plains tribes to hang the boughs over their homes and burn them in camp fires to protect against storms. As a charm sprigs of juniper berries would be carried, and some would rub the sticks on their bodies before leaving for a dangerous journey or hunt. This berry is obviously a powerful symbol, and important to the natives lifestyle! As a medicine Cedar Berries are useful for protecting our bodies!
