Goldenrod, also known as Salidago, meaning “to make whole” has been a staple to Native American life for hundreds of years!
In Europe, Salidago has been respected as a medical herb that treats many ailments from the outside of ones body to the inside.
Goldenrod has been given a bad rep in the past as being a weed and allergen that one would remove from their garden; however, in the last 40 years modern Americans have started to realize the beauty of these flowers and the powerful nature their healing properties.
Native American tribes used goldenrod as a reliable food source when gathering. The leaves and flowers are nutritious and packed with antioxidants. The roots would sometimes be chewed to relive pain from toothaches and soar throats. With the dried herb a tea would be prepared for, upper respiratory symptoms caused by allergies, colds, bacterial, and viral infections; as well as internal bleeding, gastrointestinal infections. Goldenrod tea can be used to lower ones blood pressure as well! A poultice can be made from the fresh herb to treat skin wounds, eczema, and skin infections.
Maybe one of the most prescribed uses of Goldenrod is the treatment of kidney stones, and bladder infections. As a diuretic a tea of Goldenrod can help the body cleanse of excess water, and help flush kidney stone buildup in the bladder. Our dried Goldenrod would be best brewed into a tea.
